Originally based on the Ford Falcon, the first production Mustang rolled off the assembly line in Michigan on March 9, 1964 and was shown to the general public at the New York World's Fair on April 17, 1964. It was seen on television on April 19, and made an appearance in the movie Goldfinger in September of that year.

The timing and advertising were near perfect, resulting in one of the most successful product launches in automotive history. The Mustang sold over one million units in its first 18 months.

The Mustang created a new class of cars by adapting the look of sports cars to compact sedans. This brought about the affectionate title of 'pony cars'. It also produced many competitors such as the Camaro, and led to competition from import coupes such as the Toyota Celica. The Mustang has remained in continuous production to present day after nearly 45 years and many changes.
